'Bee Facts'

'Bees & Art - Every Third Mouthful'

by Chatwin: Martin

Chatwin:Martin formed their art partnership in 1981 and their work has been shown worldwide and purchased for collections including the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Contemporary Art Society, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the National Museum of Slovakia, Kyoto Museum of Modern Art, and the British Council Collection.

Over the last ten years their interest in the environment and concern for sustainability has driven them into detailed entomological studies and they are now producing works that combine wood-veneer techniques with text and photography, some of which feature in this exhibition.

The artists live and work in Osgathorpe.

this was located in Harley Hall

Church Lane

This fascinating exhibition, amalgamating science and art, asserts that ‘Every third mouthful of food we eat is dependent upon the unmanaged pollination services of bees’.

Peter Chatwin and Pamela Martin have created a series of works that explore this globally important subject highlighting the importance of biodiversity upon our food supply.

Honeybees comprise only 10% of all bee species. The focus for this exhibition is on solitary indigenous bees which contribute to the other 90%.

Wild indigenous bees are key indicators of habitat health and the decline in the global bee population is both a sign of habitat degradation, and a serious threat to global food supply. Chatwin:Martin’s work communicates these issues and is a call for sustainability within the developed and developing worlds.

In conveying their enthusiasm and curiosity about the natural world, they emphasise their passion for this most important and enthralling of unseen workers within our food production. Working with world-renowned entomologists, the work in the studio has developed through exchanges of artistic and scientific recording, in the field visual information, and notation. Chatwin:Martin’s aim has been to assimilate their artistic practice with scientific enquiry. The largest wall panels in the exhibition are made from thin wood veneer which the artists dye with dense colour. These are layered with words and images that are worked back to reveal strata of colour, texture and meaning; works that are filled with optimism. Paired with some of these richly coloured works are monochrome mirror-images that are both literally and figuratively negative.

In addition to wood-veneer panels, are a number of photographic works that combine text with images from study trips in southern Italy, UK, USA and Pakistan. In particular they feature Chatwin:Martin’s co-collaborators, entomologists, Christopher O’Toole and Dr. Steve Buchmann, together with words that have extended meaning within the context of bees and their impact on the wider world.

St Mary's church at 1:45 & 3:30 both Saturday & Sunday

Members of the Leicester Orphean Orchestra, directed by Avis Fawcett,

played an uplifting mix from light classical music to familiar tunes from shows.

Founded by Avis in 1958, the Leicester Orphean is a community orchestra based in the east of Leicester.

Playing at a wide range of events they have helped community groups both locally & nationally to raise more than £150,000.

In addition to the main orchestra there is also a training orchestra.

We are very grateful to the musicians who were prepared to give their time & talents so generously to help our fund raising efforts.

There was no charge for admittance but we hoped listeners would choose to show your appreciation with a voluntary donation in aid of St Mary the Virgin church. Thank you to everyone who did just that.

Thank You
